The Short Answer

SparkToro solves a specific problem well: identifying which publications, podcasts, social accounts, and websites your target audience follows. For AI visibility, that data maps directly to citation source discovery. It does not track AI citations itself, but it tells you where to focus your third-party mention strategy. At 4/5, it is one of the more useful free-tier tools in the research stack.

The Citation Source Problem

AI platforms do not cite your website because you published a blog post. They cite sources that already carry authority for a topic. Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Mode each pull from different pools of trusted content, but they share one pattern: third-party mentions drive citations far more than first-party content.

Our benchmark data from 150 companies shows that 81% of B2B brands are functionally invisible in AI search results. The primary gap is not content volume. It is citation breadth. These brands are not mentioned by the sources that AI platforms trust.

The question, then, is: which sources matter? Which publications, communities, and creators does your audience actually read? And which of those sources show up in AI-generated answers?

That is the problem SparkToro addresses.

What SparkToro Actually Does

SparkToro is an audience intelligence tool built by Rand Fishkin and Casey Henry. It aggregates public data from social profiles, websites, and online behaviour to answer one question: where does a given audience pay attention?

Enter a topic, hashtag, or domain. SparkToro returns the websites they visit, the podcasts they listen to, the social accounts they follow, the YouTube channels they watch, and the publications they read. It maps attention patterns across a defined audience segment.

This is not keyword research. It is not backlink analysis. It sits in a category of its own: audience-level source mapping.

How We Tested It

We ran SparkToro queries against three audience segments relevant to AI visibility research:

  • People who frequently discuss "B2B marketing automation"
  • People who follow enterprise SaaS thought leaders
  • Audiences engaging with "AI search" and "generative engine optimization" topics

For each segment, we pulled the top websites, podcasts, and social accounts that SparkToro identified. We then cross-referenced those sources against our citation data from AI platform scans.

The overlap was instructive. Several publications that SparkToro flagged as high-attention sources for B2B marketing audiences also appeared frequently in Perplexity and ChatGPT citations for related queries. SparkToro did not predict this directly, but it narrowed the field. Instead of guessing which industry blogs to target for guest contributions or mentions, we had a ranked list of where our ICP already pays attention.

What It Does Well

Unique data. No other tool aggregates audience attention data this way. SEO tools show you backlinks and search volume. SparkToro shows you where people actually spend time. For citation strategy, that distinction matters. You need to be mentioned by sources your audience trusts, not just sources that rank.

The free tier is genuinely useful. Five searches per month is enough to map one audience segment per week. The free results include the core data: top websites, social accounts, podcasts, and demographics. For a solo practitioner or small team running a citation source audit, five searches covers most use cases.

Citation source discovery. This is where SparkToro earns its score. If you are building a list of publications to pitch, podcasts to appear on, or communities to participate in, SparkToro produces that list in minutes. The alternative is manual research across LinkedIn, Twitter, and podcast directories. SparkToro compresses that work significantly.

Clean interface. No feature bloat. Enter a query, read the results. The data visualisation is clear and the export options are straightforward.

Where It Falls Short

Limited searches on the free plan. Five per month is useful, but it forces you to be precise with your queries. Exploratory research across multiple ICPs or verticals burns through the allocation quickly. The paid plans start at $50/month, which is reasonable for agencies but a consideration for individual practitioners.

Data can be thin for niche B2B verticals. SparkToro's data is strongest for broad marketing, tech, and SaaS audiences. If your ICP operates in a narrow vertical like industrial automation or specialised financial services, the audience data thins out. Fewer public social signals means fewer data points for SparkToro to aggregate.

No direct AI visibility tracking. SparkToro tells you where your audience pays attention. It does not tell you whether those sources are being cited by AI platforms. That connection requires a separate step. You still need to run citation scans to confirm whether a SparkToro-identified source actually appears in AI-generated answers. It is an input to a citation strategy, not a measurement of one.

AI Visibility Dimension: Citation

SparkToro maps to one AI visibility dimension: citation. Specifically, it supports citation source identification. It answers the question "where should I seek mentions?" rather than "am I being mentioned?"

In our four-dimension AI visibility scoring model, citation measures how frequently and broadly a brand appears in AI-generated responses. SparkToro does not measure citation directly. It identifies the sources most likely to generate citations if you are mentioned by them. That makes it a planning tool, not a tracking tool.

For teams that already have citation measurement in place, SparkToro fills the strategic gap: knowing which sources to target for the highest citation probability.

Who Should Use It

SparkToro is most useful for marketers building a citation strategy who need to find the right sources to be mentioned by. If you are running a content programme and want to identify which publications, podcasts, and creators matter for your audience, SparkToro produces that intelligence faster than manual research.

It is less useful if you need AI visibility measurement, competitive citation tracking, or keyword-level citation data. Those require different tools.

The free tier is sufficient for practitioners running monthly citation source audits. Teams running multi-segment research across multiple ICPs will need Starter or above.
